The Coots and Gallinules

They are birds from aquatic environments, belonging to the family Rallidae within the Order Gruiformes. The Coots have a short beak, black coloration, and membranous expansions in the toes, which have a swimming function. They eat vegetables. The Gallinules and related forms are more colorful, have a longer beak, and their toes lack membranous expansions. They are omnivorous with preference for aquatic invertebrates.
