They are big-sized carnivore mammals having short torsos and lower hindquarters. They usually congregate to hunt, but there are scavenger species too. They can crush bones with their powerful molars, which can be seen in the skull of a Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) exhibited here. Presently, there exist only four species, living in Africa and Asia.
