They belong to the same group as the other armadillos, and as they present the body covered with dermal shields, although in the case of the Pink fairy armadillos the shields cover only the dorsal part of the head and the body, and the back of the latter. They are small mammals, with underground habits, and there are two species, the Lesser fairy armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus), up to 12 cm in length, and the Chaco fairy armadillo (Calyptophractus retusus), larger (up to 18cm), of which there are only 3 records for Argentina.
